2010 Healthy Habits Baby Steps- Pt. 4

How many times have you heard, "There's no such thing as a bad food."? I would usually agree. Except with this. Artificial sweeteners are actually not a food at all, but chemicals. Saccharin, Aspartame, Acesulfame K, & Sucralose are all advertised as a low calorie way to sweeten food. Stay away! They have been linked to many toxic side effects like personality changes, cancer, migraines, and weight gain. That's right, weight gain. When you consume these fake sugars, your brain is tricked into thinking you are about to ingest a lot of carbs. When you don't, your body kind of freaks out, & you start craving more crabs, so you can actually eat more. What should you use instead? Well, since we're on baby steps, just replace it with real sugar or corn syrup for now. Look for healthier alternatives for those as the year goes on. :)
Foods with fake sugar-
  • things that say "diet" or "sugar free" or the "zero" cokes
  • foods that are supposed to be sweet but say "light"
  • Crystal Light
  • packets you put in your tea- instead, ask for sweet tea or drink something else
  • Gum! I have yet to find a gum with real sugar!
  • Many medicines- read the labels
